Chefs to receive Michelin Stars under the stars, at Chabot Space + Science Center

Oakland, CA – Visit Oakland, the official Destination Marketing Organization for the city of Oakland, is pleased to announce that Michelin will host California’s 2023 Michelin Guide Ceremony in Oakland, on Tuesday, July 18, at the Chabot Space + Science Center.  The event will unveil the annual Michelin Guide selection of restaurants and welcome 200+ chefs from across California to receive coveted Michelin Stars and other award distinctions.

“We are thrilled to unveil the 2023 edition of the Michelin Guide California in Oakland,” said Gwendal Poullennec, the International Director of the Michelin Guides. “Oakland and the Bay Area boast a flourishing culinary landscape, and we are excited to hold the ceremony right in the heart of it all! We are eager to celebrate the accomplishments of California’s top restaurant teams.”

The Michelin Guide is constantly observing the evolution of culinary destinations around the world. The Michelin Guide is an independent publication produced by anonymous Michelin inspectors, who have adhered to five criteria for more than a century: 1) quality products; 2) the harmony of flavors; 3) the mastery of cooking techniques; 4) the personality of the chef in the cuisine; 5) consistency between each visit (each restaurant is inspected several times a year) and through the menu as a whole.

Oakland is proud to be the chosen location for the 2023 event.  Oakland is one of the most diverse cities in California and one of the top food cities in the US. 125 languages are spoken in The Town, and that multicultural mix is strongly represented in the vibrant culinary scene.  In May 2023, Oakland had 5 restaurant additions to the Michelin Guide taking the total of Michelin-recommended restaurants in The Town to 20.

“We are incredibly honored to have been selected to welcome Michelin and California’s culinary talent to Oakland” commented Peter Gamez, President and CEO of Visit Oakland.  “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to experience all that Oakland has to offer – including our amazing culinary scene.  To be the chosen destination is a true testament to Oakland’s warm, authentic spirit, and we look forward to sharing that with everyone who visits.”

The 2023 Michelin Guide California will be unveiled Tuesday, July 18, 2023, in Oakland at the Chabot Space + Science Center. The private event is by invitation only.
